The United Kingdoms’ flag features the crosses of it’s nation states, St George, St Andrew and St Patrick and has been the standard flag since 1801.

After the death of Elizabeth the 1st in 1603 left England without an heir, James VI of Scotland was asked to assume the English throne, combining the two nations as one Kingdom of Great Britain. The execution of Charles I in 1649 saw an end to this union until Charles II restored the previous flags in 1660. 1707 saw Queen Anne join Scotland and England with the first Treaty of Union stating that the nations flags would be conjoined in such a way as pleased the Queen. In 1800 the College of Arms designed a new flag with St Patrick and Ireland included. This is interesting at St Patrick doesn’t have a flag – The red saltire on white is an emblem of the powerful Irish Fitzgerald family.
