After being a part of the Holy Roman Empire and then under French rule, Germanic speaking nations rallied to become a unified, self governing Nation state, taking the colours black, red, and gold from the uniforms of the Lützowian Free Corps who started the resistance. The first flag of the united Germany was Prussian colours of White, red and black, but in 1919 this flag was readopted, only to be abolished by Hitler 14 years later. Re-adopted again in 1949, this flag features the eagle when use in an official capacity.
