According to legend, the white cross on a red field was given as a sign from heaven to the crusader King Valdemar II of Denmark before the battle of Lyndaniz against the Estonians in 1219. The off-centre cross with the extended arm is also used by other Scandinavian countries, many of whom were ruled by Denmark for centuries.
