Combined Arms Contact - Pushing ahead under fire For the tens of thousands of Australian soldiers who served in Vietnam it was largely a war of patrols and close quarter contacts against an elusive enemy. More often than not infantrymen would fight these engagements on their own, away from support or supplies, relying on their own firepower, including an infantry platoon's three M60 7.62mm general purpose machine guns (GPMG). But on occasion they called on, and got, the support of other arms and services-armour, artillery and air. In the 2013 artwork 'Combined Arms Contact' from which this medallion image is lifted, renowned Australian artist, Drew Harrison shows a soldier with his M60 GPMG pushing forward in the fight. But unseen in the medallion is the heavy fire support and cover provided by Centurion tanks of the 1st Armoured Regiment and an M113 armoured personnel carrier from the 3rd Cavalry Regiment. Overhead reassuring Hueys of Air Force are moving in. Between 1962 and 1973 almost 60,000 Australians - ground troops, Air Force and Navy personnel, served in Vietnam. More than 3,000 were wounded. Of the 521 who lost their lives 501 were Army.
